Day 15 - Burgos to Hontanas

Day 15 - Monday, 6th May, 2014 - 31.8 km

This was going to be a bit of a monster of a day.  We were upping the mileage to 31-32 km in order to get to Hontanas a beautiful little village hidden in a dip in the Meseta.  I had been there before and considered it one of my favourite stops.  It is quite hidden because the Meseta is such a flat plain you have no warning view that it is there other than a sign which states 'Hontanas 0.5 km'.  You do the sums in your head - I walk one kilometre in 15 minute ( four an hour), so half a kilometre is 7 minutes 30 seconds, so I must be able to see this village, which you can't.  Then suddenly the land drops away and reveals this small village, a resting place for pilgrims since at least the Middle Ages!

We paced ourselves stopping every 10 km to try to rest our feet and take on food for energy.  At the first stop we again bumped into Mary of 'There's something about Mary' fame (the hapless German girl who once again had got in front of us) - how did she do it.  As we left her in the town before our destination we kept an eye on any vehicle, which might be a taxi to make sure she was not been delivered ahead of us again.

The weather was sunny, but cloudy and perfect for walkers.  It was the first day Eila had walked across the Meseta rather than cross by speeding car; she was impressed.  The rolling hills that stretched out either side of us had young green wheat crop and would look a whole lot different by Summer as the harvest approached.

Buen Camino.
